After an absence from here due to tummy bugs, I’m back! It’s been a busy old couple of days. The tree and decorations finally went up yesterday and it’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas! So for today’s craft, I’m featuring a very cute nativity scene. We actually sat and made this today and the kids loved it! Since we have saved up tons of toilet roll tubes, I wanted to use them for this and found a great site that gave a free download of the characters. We didn’t use the scene that was provided, instead we used an old cereal box which my daughter coloured. We printed off the templates and then they were coloured in. We stuck them to the toilet roll tubes and voila, a super cute up-cycled nativity scene!

Here’s another great idea for a Christmas card. Whilst the one linked is not a card, I would put this onto some card and send it out as a card. If you prefer to keep your kids artwork at home though, it could be mounted on card as a great piece of Christmas art. This is really simple to do. Draw around your child’s foot for the reindeer body and then draw around their hands for the antlers. Alternatively, this could be done by using paint and doing the messy way of foot and hand print art!

Do any of you have your trees up yet? We still try to stick to some kind of rule with 12 days before Christmas, that way we don’t all get fed up with having the tree up for the whole of December. But hey, I know some people can’t wait and the trees and decorations are up on the 1st December. Whatever is your personal preference, you’ve still got time to add a new decoration to your tree for this year. This is a great craft for kids to do, with a little supervision. Just take a styrofoam ball and attach the pom poms and the looped ribbon with straight pins. You can use whatever colour pom poms and ribbon or thread you have in the house and it’ll still look great. Simple but very effective.

I have been so busy recently doing a distance learning course and I feel this place has been neglected, but I completed my course and I’m back! Not too far behind for Christmas craft posts as it’s only 2nd December, so here we go. We did this countdown calender last year and the kids have asked for it again. It’s so simple but they love it and it makes the countdown a lot more fun. Each morning until Christmas a small piece of cotton wool is glued onto the date until Santa has a full beard on Christmas Day!

Thanksgiving is also an excuse to decorate the house and make it look great before the family come over.

Having never made salt dough before, I wasn’t sure what to expect. I followed the half, half, whole rule, which ended up about half, half, three!!! We had to add so much more flour we ended up with tonnes of dough…so we decided to do a few Christmas decorations too (to be decorated at a later date)! We left them all out to air dry but I think the mixture was too thick and I had to put them into a low oven for an hour the next morning. This did the trick and they were soon ready to paint. We got messy with the paint, sequins and glitter and this is what they turned out like. We also did some rangoli decorations and mendhi designs on paper. All in all a great craft activity!

So Halloween is over, bonfire night has passed and the children are back at school. Nights are getting darker and colder as Autumn takes a firm grip. There are still some celebrations that can enable you and your kids to be crafty before the real countdown to Christmas begins though! Diwali this year is celebrated on Tuesday 13th November. Diyas (or Divas) are traditionally made from clay and hold a small amount of oil and a wick. They are lit around the house on Diwali so that Goddess Lakshmi (Goddess of Wealth) can find her way into your house. We will be learning about Diwali during school and I intend to make these really simple but effective Diyas with my kids.
